What is a winning Hub?

66

By Tony Flanigan

This little rant applies to not only Hubpages. it's not even for all writing sites on the Internet. This is for writing in general, in whatever medium you may choose to use.

So, you wanna write?
So, you wanna write?

First of all, I am not a writer. I am not even the rear end of a writer. I do however enjoy just tossing words out and spreading them around to see where they land and what happens when they land.

I enjoy reading and learning.

I know what I'm looking for when I'm researching a particular subject. Pretty much the same as any other person, I don't want to spend hours and hours wading through piles of verbal ejacula, only to find that what I am in actual fact looking for, is not there!

This entails further searching and hunting.

I must admit that when I open a book, or land on a website, I briefly skim through it, to get an idea of whether or not it is worth my while to either study the book more, or to stay on the website, and read further.

In a small way I follow the teachings of Terry Dean, who has been making a living online since 1996. I say in a small way because I personally don't like "hard-line" or "aggressive" marketing. I don't enjoy having someone "in my face". However, reading his material, most of which is free, AND easily accessible, has taught me incredible amounts about not only Internet marketing, but about life, business, and myself.

Terry's bottom line approach to online marketing, and this is the philosophy I most appreciate, is to GIVE. Give information.

Give information? Yes, GIVE!

So many "online coaches" nowadays will tell you to enroll, at a fee of course, in order to benefit from the "Insert at least 3 superlatives of your choice here" training they can provide. The exclusive "Insert at least 3 superlatives of your choice here" information that they have methodically garnered over the (past) year(s) is about to become yours.

So, whats my problem with these guys?

My problem is:

Nowhere in all the preliminary pre-enrolment crap they bombard you with do they actually tell you what it is they will be doing during the training! These "Coaches" gives you loads of superlative nonsensical metaphor, wrapped in a glossy hard-sell cover, but, they don't GIVE you any real information!

Okay, this brings us back to the title of this Hub.

A good Hub, in my opinion, is a Hub that fulfills a need.

A good Hub is not a Hub that tries to get you to click on a link that will lead you to enrol into some kinda scam.

A good Hub leaves the reader feeling satisfied.

A satisfied reader WILL click a link, only because they now trust, "like', and appreciate what you recommend.

So, to summarise in a few words, a good Hub, nah, lets call it a Great Hub, will give information or tell a story.

A Great Hub will leave the reader with a desire to click a link, for no other reason than because you, the Hubber, took the time and effort to GIVE first!

I agree with you, Tony, although when writing I sometimes withholds information intentionally, because I don’t want to spoil a good “story” with facts. :-). Great hub, voted UP!

I really like this rant - and I get the feeling the words just poured out of you - perhaps writers with "writer's block" should rant about something if they are struggling to find words. Everything seems to come together so nicely during a rant. Great hub, Tony!

Yeah, I hate teasers. A little anticipation, fine, but if they never get to the point, I get ticked off.

@Pcunix. Lol, you are so right. Anticipation, and leading to a point (albeit on another page) is fine, but endless aimless waffling is not cool.

Thx for the visit.

Unfortunately there are many of this bla bla bla things on the web. They also costed me a couple of cents too many. Now I steer away quickly if I sniff a chancer.

These people do more harm than good, and most of them end up with nothing themselves as well. The circle of life....

I enjoyed this Hub and the advice and good sense of it. Thanks for putting it together. I will look into the Terry Dean site soon - just not tonight, I've got to get some sleep, LOL!

Hi to Teresa too!

Love and peace

When I started blogging a good 'writer' friend told me to always remember that I need to blog first and formost for myself and that that is the key to good blogging. In many ways it applies to all forms of writing. Developing trust through giving. Very sound advise to add to these words of wisdom. Thanks.

Hey Gill, thanks for stopping by. Dunno about wisdom, nothing I wrote here was "original", I was (am) just annoyed by all the BS that abounds on the Internet!

Yeah Tony I agree with you.

I am so sick of those blogs/sales letters you name it that just string you along.

Unfortunately a lot of people fall for them and get caught up in the exciting marketing script and buy it, only to find out months later they could have found the same information elsewhere for free.

@lauryallan: Thank you for your visit, and thank you for your support. I think it's about time I come clean - I actually fell for a couple of these schemes in my early days on the Internet.

Yeah Tony, I think we all did. I know I did too.

Now I don't buy anything until I've done extensive searches on the net and even then I tend to wait a month or 2 just to be sure. I don't want to be rushed into wasting my money. Nothing worse than feeling like a chump!

It is a basic truth on the net too.

Quality content is the King, no matter what.

Everything else comes with it.

Otherwise it seems most like spam - no one comes back.

I agree with you @Tony.

Quiet helpful hub for new content writers!

@mywikistep: Here on HubPages I don't really worry too much about my content as such, Hubpages is my online repository for any writing I do that doesn't fit any of our other sites. Thank you for taking the time to read my rant, and to leave a comment.
